What Is I-CAN?

I-CAN is a community-based, coordinated effort committed to preparing students in Antrim and Kalkaska Counties for college and career success.

Goals:

  • 60% of individuals in Antrim and Kalkaska Counties will have a postsecondary degree or credential by 2025.

  • We will focus first on supporting increased college enrollment and FAFSA Completion.

 

Common Vocabulary:

  • College is post-secondary education. This includes any attainment of postsecondary credentials - professional/technical certificates and academic degrees.

  • College is a necessity. It is a prerequisite to success in the current economy. Everyone must pursue and complete a postsecondary degree or credential in order to obtain a rewarding, long-term career that pays a family-sustaining wage.

  • College is for everyone. All students, of all backgrounds, of all interests can and should complete a postsecondary degree or credential.

  • College is good for our communities. Postsecondary educational opportunity and atainment are critical to a just and equitable society, a strong economy, and heathy communities.

 

The Need is Real:

60% Percentage of jobs that will require a college degree by 2018
38% America's college attainment rate
36% Michigan's college attainment rate
30.74% Antrim County's college attainment rate
18.2% Kalkaska County's college attainment rate
26% Michigan residents that begin college but never finish

Students in Alba, Bellaire, Kalkaska, forest Area and Mencelona perform below the TBAISD average on several college readiness indicators.
